Module 4: Assignments

4.A.1 - GoReact

Reflect on Current Tensions in the ASL Language Community:
Instructions:
After you've viewed all videos, share your reflections and experiences in GoReact. Here's a guide for your reflections: Have you observed or experienced a situation where a person using ASL tells another they're signing "wrong"? What was your reaction? Have you seen any influence of the current tensions on your family/friends' signing? Are the tensions apparent in your area? Do your family/friends regard those influences as positive or negative? Noah Bucholtz talks about bilingualism and people shifting between the two languages as they talk to another person who is also bilingual. This phenomen often happens when two or more CODAs get together and chat. For many, this is part of the fun of being a CODA and a lot of ASL-English language play happens. Is this 'CODA talk' something you're familiar with? What are your experiences? What do you predict will happen to ASL with all these influences happening?

                                   Compass Passport Module Survey:

Please take about five minutes to respond to the questions below about the Passport Module you just completed. Don't put your name on the form (your responses are anonymous). Thank you for taking the time to do this. Everything you share will help us make these Modules better for the next group of Passport participants!

Several of the questions are based on the CIQ developed by Stephen Brookfield. A CIQ sample and related research are available at: http://stephenbrookfield.com/Dr._Stephen_D._Brookf...

This could be the action of the facilitator or another participant.
This could be about your own reactions to what went on, something that someone did, or anything else that occurs).
