The Compass Program


Individuals invited to participate in the Compass program will follow an individualized program of study. An applicant's program of study is based on current skills and experience and determined by the Navigation team. Once applicants enter the program, it may be completed in 3 - 9 months, depending on the program of study offered.

Individualized, one-on-one mentoring with Coda mentor and further development and  support in transitioning to professional interpreting

Compass programs are tuition-free. ​Sorenson Communications Interpreter Education and Professional Development covers all tuition costs as long as participants meet requirements and expectations for each program.

Requirements to Participate


​In order to participate in the Compass programs, you will need:
  1. Access to a computer with a webcam
  2. Reliable Internet access
  3. Videocamera (phone, tablet, computer, etc.)
  4. Commitment to participate (amount of time required varies by individual program)

Why does Sorenson Communications provide this training for Codas?

​The Compass program is sponsored in full by Sorenson Communications, Inc. through the Interpreter Education and Professional Development department..  

​Sorenson Communications is committed to giving back to the community by supporting Codas who have the interest, commitment and potential to become interpreters.  Sorenson recognizes that Codas are heritage language users with a lifetime of interaction in the Deaf community and in sign language and thus, are in a unique position to succeed as interpreters.  

Codas who complete the Compass program are not expected nor guaranteed to obtain employment with Sorenson Communications, but may pursue any type of interpreting they wish, including work with Sorenson.
