Creating Your Language Sample
Click on the video above to view the instruction in ASL
For your language samples, you will video record yourself retelling two short videos, one in English and one in ASL. See our tips for recording your videos. When you are done, you will have two video recordings, one in English and one in ASL.

You can record yourself with any device you choose, such as your phone, your computer, a tablet, or a video camera. You can choose which retell video (English or ASL) you would prefer to start with.
  1. When you are ready to begin, click on the link provided below in the English retell or ASL retell sections to view the 3-minute video that you will retell.
  2. Watch the video once, and only once. Just listen to the story. Do not take notes. It will be apparent if you rehearse, use notes, or view the video more than once.
  3. Afterward, video record your retelling of the story. Tell the story in first person like the storyteller does, using I and my, for example, instead of he or she. Include as much of the original story as you can remember.
  4. Save your recording where it can be easily retrieved. Please use the file names recommended in each section below.
  5. You will upload your video recordings to YouTube and make sure they are set to unlisted (not private) so that only those with the link can see them.
  6. You will then copy the links and send them to the Compass team through this form. The video submission form is at the bottom of this page.
English Retell Instructions
Important! Please click on the video to view a demonstration of how to do your English retell.
For the English retell, test your device before you do the retell to be sure your voice recording is loud enough. Then follow these steps:

  1. View the short video demonstration below on how to do your English retell.
  2. When you are ready to begin, click on the link below, which will take you to a 3-minute English video in which a woman tells about a childhood experience.
  3. Watch the video once, and only once. Just listen to the story. Do not take notes. It will be apparent if you rehearse, use notes, or view the video more than once.
  4. You may practice retelling the story one or two times before uploading the final recording, if you wish. Please do not view the video again.
  5. Record yourself retelling the story in spoken English. Tell the story in first person like the storyteller does, using I and my, for example, instead of he or she. Include as much of the original story as you can remember.
  6. Save your recording where it can be easily retrieved. Please use the file name: EnglishRetell_YourName.
  7. When you are done recording both videos, upload them to YouTube, and copy the links to the video submission form at the bottom of this page.

ASL Retell Instructions
Important! Please click on the video to view a demonstration of how to do your ASL retell
  1. For the ASL retell, be sure that there is enough light and that your signing is clearly visible. Please be sure you are not standing in front of a window or other light source that will make it hard for us to see you clearly.  See our video recording tips to make sure your video will be easy for the Compass team to view. Then follow these steps:
  2. View the short video demonstration below on how to do your ASL retell.
  3. When you are ready to begin, click on the link below, which will take you to a 3-minute ASL video in which a man tells about his truck buying experience.
  4. Watch the video once, and only once. Just watch the story. Do not take notes. It will be apparent if you rehearse, use notes, or view the video more than once.
  5. You may practice retelling the story one or two times before uploading your final recording, if you wish. Please do not view the video again.
  6. Record yourself retelling the story in sign language. Tell the story in first person like the storyteller does, using I and my, for example, instead of he or she. Include as much of the original story as you can remember.
  7. Save your recording where it can easily be retrieved. Please use the file name: ASLRetell_YourName.
