- If you have visited another culture, identify 2-3 things that would be "visible" and whether you were able to identify 2-3 "invisible" aspects of the culture. (15-20 min)
- Williamson shares that interpreters need to examine their life experiences and thoughts; Mindess states that Codas may have a mixture of values and perspectives from both the Deaf community and hearing communities; what cultural values/behaviors might need to be "checked" at the door during interpreting? RBS Discussion # 2
- What is collectivism? What is individualism? What examples of collectivism/individualism have you seen/experienced? How do these examples form your understanding of culture in the Deaf and/or hearing communities?
- Which aspects of politeness did you find surprising when you compared your transparency limitations with hearing friends & acquaintances in comparison to Deaf friends & acquaintances? (10-15 minutes)
- According to the three As presentation, agency is defined as the capacity to take action independently. Take for example how an FBI agent has the resources (experiences, knowledge, authority, training, etc) to make decisions as they do their work. While they make their own decisions, they also anticipate and take responsibility for the outcome of their decisions. As a Coda interpreter, consider how you would make your own decisions in the interpreting field. How can you weigh your resources and balance the expectations of others (rules, ethics, policies, laws, etc)? What examples can you provide from your own experiences or the scenario conflicts we've evaluated so far that may illustrate agency? (15-25 minutes)
